Fast approximations to positive time-frequency distributions, with applications

Wc prescnt a gcncral approach to approximating positive timc-frcqucnc:y distrihutions (TFDs) through nonlinear combinations of spectrograms. Closed-form solutions for the combinalions arc ohtaincd v ia optimization of entropy functionals suhjcct to an cncrgy constraint. Wc apply two such Combinations to gcncrating ,approximate TFDs for whale sounds and specch. Through thcse applications, it can he scen that these methods givc results superior to that achicved with individual spectrograms, and remarkably close to the positive TFDs obtained via computational ly-intensive methods.
